As the world thinks about the passing of the Pope, I can't help but recall how important his foreign travels and visits were to our 5th and 6th grade Current Events classes. Challenger, Mt.St. Helens, Beirut, Geraldine Ferraro, Chernobyl, and the Pope---grade school in the eighties. We're no longer a religious family, but I'm sure my Grandma Mickey has some thoughts on John Paul II this week. Once Catholic, you're kinda always Catholic.
